First Published: 07/10/2011 Last Updated: 10/11/2012 Variation Theory Marton and Booth (1997) summarise the research and development of phenomenography, which provided the basis for the development of Variation Theory. Phenomenography is interested in the ‘qualitatively’ different ways in which people experience the same thing or phenomenon. The Variation Theory is a response to the one-sided emphasis on influence studies by the former “French school” as well as to the American focus on aesthetic interpretation, inspired by New Criticism, which regrettably ignored literature in non-European languages.

Variation is a characteristic of language: there is more than one way of saying the same thing. Speakers may vary pronunciation ( accent ), word choice ( lexicon ), or morphology and syntax (sometimes called " grammar "). [1]

Variation theory

“Variation theory is a theory of learning and experience that explains how a learner might come to see, understand, or experience a given phenomenon in a certain way” and why two students sitting in the same class might come to understand a concept differently (Orgill, 2012, p. 3391). The purpose of this article is to present variation theory as (1) a useful way for instructors to think about student learning and (2) a potentially powerful theoretical framework from which to conduct

Variation theory

Linguistic variation does not equate with language ungrammaticality, but speakers In quantum mechanics, the variational method is one way of finding approximations to the lowest energy eigenstate or ground state, and some excited states. This allows calculating approximate wavefunctions such as molecular orbitals. The basis for this method is the variational principle. The method consists of choosing a "trial wavefunction" depending on one or more parameters, and finding the values of these parameters for which the expectation value of the energy is the lowest possible.
